Hey I have King's Quest Version 2 from the 3 disk KQ collection.  Neither the dos or windows versions work.  When I install the windows version it says it cannot find sierra.err or SCIDLL.dll.  Compatibility options don't help.  For the dos version I run the batch file with windows 95 or 98 compatibility and the 256 color option.  I start it with VDMsound and I can hear the sound of the opening Sierra logo and kq7 menu but all I see is the dos commands for VDMsound launching.  The weird thing is that the dos background color changes to white when the kq7 would of come up.  Any solutions?

You could also purchase the re-release of the KQ Collection due out tomorrow  :D

When I access the bat file for dos it has the wierd color thing going on.  I have dosbox but the problem is it can't opne the batch file, it will only open the sierra.exe file.  And when it does that I get the message that it can't find the 999.pal resource and that to make sure my cd is inserted (which it is).

Do you have your CD drive mounted in dos box? If so do you have it mounted as a CDRom drive? The batch file is the only thing that will work because it points to the cd drive for its resources while just running the exe file the game has no idea where to get the resources.

I mounted the cd drive as follow : "mount d d:\ -t cdrom".  After that I started up sierra.exe and still got the message about 999.pal resource.

As I said, you can't use just sierra.exe because the game is looking for 999.pal in the folder you're running the exe from, but since that file along with others are located on the cd you ahve to run the batch file.

How did you install it initially? I just copied the whole game onto my hard drive (without install.exe) and ran it from there and I don't even need the cd. But you have to copy all the sounds and everything...big files. But I'm pretty sure you have to run the batch file if you want to run it off the cd.

Also try putting -ioctl on the end when you mount your cd drive, too.

I did the -ioctl before and didn't help.  But like I said, I can't get the batch file to run in dosbox.  When I'm at the command line C:\Sierra\kqc\kq7d I type in kq7.bat and it says "illegal command: C:\sierra\kqc\kq7d\sierra" which is referring to the .exe file.  How in the world can I run the batch file in dosbox?
As for installation I did a dos installation from the install batch file in the cd.  I did a full install of 100 megs on the hard drive.
